MUD Classic 2002 Tournament
Return to Ultimate
The Bitney College Prep Ultimate Team traveled back to Quincy over the weekend of April 27-28th. The level of competition at Mountain Ultimate Disc's MUD Classic 2002 was the highest we've seen yet, including some of the top coed teams in the nation. After struggling through a little snow on the way Feather River College, Saturday's games were played in a mixture of high wind, light rain and sleet. Despite these conditions, we managed to score points against most of the other teams in our pool: LogJammin, Venceremos, Big Wreck, and Everything & Nothing. Several of these teams were using a zone defense, very effective in windy conditions, and something we haven't really faced before. The highlight of the day was the start of our last game against Everything & Nothing, when Jesse came on fire with several key defensive plays to break the other team's spirit and help put us up 2-0. We even got Dan Bertoncini (Ryan's dad) off the sidelines to help out.
Saturday night's dinner was held at the Oakland campground, just outside of town, and included music by an Irish Folk band. Parker and a few other players got up and demonstrated their dancing skills, drawing applause from the crowd. We stuck around after dinner hoping to hear the Reggae band play, but it was really more of a multi-hour Reggae sound test, so we left after what we think was their first official number. Marc Eastman, the tournament director, graciously put our team up at his house, while he and the other teams stayed the night at the campground.
Mr. Baker, who was nursing a cold the entire weekend, busted out of the van and onto the field with us on Sunday, turning in an impressive performance on both offense and defense. We racked up points against Big Wreck again, then had a very spirited game against Free Range, from Reno. The latter were so impressed with the progress we'd made since we saw them at Fall in the MUD, they want to meet in Truckee to scrimmage against us a few times this summer.

Carey takes refuge from the elements.

Cory looks downfield as Casey gets in position for a dump.

Carey just misses smacking the disc as Lonnie, James and Casey keep the pressure on.

"Too sexy for my shirt..."

"No, Casey, I won't let you adjust your stats."

Jake, Laura, Holly, Coach, and Sage get fired up for their next game. "More points - MORE FUN!"

"L" is for...

Carey is not amused. Jennifer tries to console her with a disc. Lonnie tries to dance off camera.

James & Holly anxiously watch Sage dive for the score.

Free Range player accidently demonstrates to Holly the danger of receiving a "Hospital Pass", with Ryan & Jake close by for moral support.

Molly makes a leaping catch for the score as Carey, Jake and Coach Schneider look on. |
