Cold Fusion 2002 Tournament
Return to Ultimate
The Bitney College Prep Ultimate Team traveled to Eugene, Oregon over the weekend of November 1st-3rd to take part in a high school tournament hosted by the Sheldon High School Fighting Irish. The teams we met there were all well-coached, well-organized, and experienced, the result of a couple of years playing against each other regularly and a great deal of support from local club teams. This is the kind of Ultimate community I'd like to see blossom here in Nevada City/Grass Valley.
Although we didn't win any games, there were three in which we came close, particularly the last one on Sunday, where if we had scored during the last point we would have forced overtime. Everyone who came seemed to rise to the level of the competition, many of our players turning in their best performances yet. Several of our star players were missing, so I have high hopes for our next tournament.
Three highlights from the weekend:
- Jesse sprinting to the wrong end zone following a quick turnover, and Sage actually hucking the disc to him!
- Max convincingly demonstrating the Conservation of Talent rule by making an incredible catch of a disc thrown to someone else, and then whipping it directly into his defender's chest.
- Our Savage Seven female players taking the field together to assert that they can run with any guy, on any field, any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.
These exceptional qualities, our excellent cheers, butterfly wings and other personal decorations earned us the Spirit Award, and we all received skirts that match our blue shirts perfectly.
Many thanks go to Dave Baker and (my wife) Cindi Branscum for helping out with the long drive and chaperone duties this weekend.

I repeat: Tyler and Laura are NOT dating (though Cody does look a bit jealous.) |
